Healthcare Provider Courses

Target Group

 Nursing staff, Intermediate and Basic Life Support Paramedics, as well as final year students in these fields can attend the course. Additionally, the course is open to any healthcare provider who may encounter critically ill or injured infants and children, even if such encounters are infrequent.

Requirements

Valid AHA BLS for HCP card, RCSA CPR for Professionals, RCSA Advanced CPR for Professionals or Valid Advanced Cardiac Life Support card (ACLS).

A BLS / CPR for Professionals course can be presented prior to the course if necessary.

Course Content

During PEARS, students interact with real patient cases, and realistic simulations to assess and stabilize paediatric patients experiencing respiratory and shock emergencies, and cardiopulmonary arrest. PEARS prepares students to provide appropriate lifesaving interventions within the initial minutes of response until a child can be transferred to an advanced life support provider.

  • Systematic paediatric assessment and basic airway management.
  • Recognition and stabilisation of respiratory emergencies.
  • Recognition and stabilisation of shock paediatric emergencies.
  • Recognition and stabilisation of cardiac arrest.
  • Resuscitation team concept.

Assessment

Participants are required to complete a multiple-choice examination on the first day of the course, achieving a minimum mark of 84%. Furthermore, they must pass a practical assessment on the second day.

Duration

The PEARS course is a 2-day interactive contact session with a blend of theoretical and practical components. 

Certification

All participants who successfully complete the course will receive: 

• An AHA PEARS for HCP card.
• Accredited by the HPCSA and University of the Witwatersrand, each participant will receive 15 CPD and 1 ethics points.

  1. Confirm space on a specific course date with PEC. We recommend allowing 1 month for preparation before the course.

  3. Materials are made available for collection or post prior to the course. Please note that postage out of SA will be at your own cost. We offer Postnet to Postnet services within SA for an extra fee of R110.
